Tuesday- 11:54, 28/12/2021

(VAN) Scientists suggest the central province of Quang Tri focus on developing some indigenous medicinal plants such as Jasminum subtriplinerve and melaleuca tree.

Quang Tri Province’s Department of Agriculture and Rural Development and a consulting team led by Associate Professor and Dr. Tran Van On, advisor of the One Commune, One Product (OCOP) Program have just visited the medicinal plant growing areas in Quang Tri province. This is one of the activities in the master plan on the development of medicinal plants and OCOP products on medicinal herbs of Quang Tri province.

The team surveyed climatic and soil conditions and took samples to assess the essential oil content of cinnamon trees grown naturally in districts of Huong Hoa, Dakrong and Cam Lo. The team also surveyed the growing areas and distillation areas of essential oils of Melaleuca , Jasminum subtriplinerve plantations and processing facilities and cinnamon growing areas in Cam Lo District.

In the past time, with policies to support the development of medicinal plants, the whole province of Quang Tri has developed about 100 hectares of key medicinal plants such as cloves, Bo Chinh ginseng, oxtails. Recently, the first batch of finished “an xoa” medicinal herbs from Quang Tri province has been exported to the US market.

After the field survey, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Tran Van On recommended that the agricultural sector in Quang Tri and other localities in the province should have mechanisms and policies to develop indigenous medicinal plants. The localities then should develop key OCOP products through improving technical standards, forming a chain of product consumption and building a branch for the products.

Assoc. Prof. Dr. Tran Van On also proposed further studies on the effects of Jasminum subtriplinerve so that the product could not only reach domestic market but also overseas ones.

As for cinnamon, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Tran Van On said that, in addition to the planting areas in Cam Lo district in association with Vietnam Cinnamon Export and Production Joint Stock Company (VINASAMEX), it is necessary to test more varieties of Tra My, Thanh Hoa cinnamon to assess suitability with soil conditions and essential oil content.
